This is what may be the pinnacle of Doyle's lyrical style in a score that is a once so monumentally gothic and powerful, to light, romantic, and tragic. The score opens up with To Think of A Story which doesn't really give us so much an introduction to a theme so much as it sets the mood for the rest of the score. Settled in much after that is the romantic theme for both Victor and Elizabeth, which while chromatic in motion, is one of the highlights if the score. Written before the film began, the theme when presented is played on strings in the cue The Wedding Night which is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard from Doyle. Though the theme plays both before and after, this cue is the most developed of them. The shame is that when it plays again it is in a disjointed form when he tries to bring her back to life. Now as for the creature, his theme is played on brass and horn, in such force that in a single listening can be a bit overwhelming at times. That coupled with the fact that this score has one of the wettest mixes I have ever heard, makes listening to it at full volume almost crazy. Which is a shame because if there is any fault it is that because of this mixing I am caught having to change the volume constantly between the soft romantic music and the gothic monstrosity that is this score. This is one of those listening experiences that one must listen to before they die. While the mixing with the sheep power of the gothic elements are great, they at times may become overwhelming to those unprepared for them. Much like the novels themselves this work of art is a masterpiece.
