This release presents Bernard Herrmann’s complete soundtrack to the original 1962 version of Cape Fear, a psychological thriller starring Robert Mitchum, Gregory Peck, Martin Balsam, and Polly Bergen.
The film was initially storyboarded by Alfred Hitchcock (who was also supposed to direct it but quit over a dispute), and was subsequently directed by J. Lee Thompson.
Martin Scorsese brilliantly remade the film in 1991, starring Robert DeNiro, but using the same (rearranged) Bernard Herrmann score.
Herrmann’s complete soundtrack to the 1956 Nunnally Johnson film The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit (also starring Gregory Peck) has been added as a bonus.
