Gnomeo and Juliet - 07/10 - Review of Jason FLZ, submitted at
To start off, let me first say (about the songs featured on the album) that if you don't like Elton John or his music, skip this entirely. Now let's move on to the 15 minutes of James Newton Howard's score. JNH is no stranger to animated film scores. Be it his adventerous themes for 'Atlantis: The Lost Empire' or the beautiful melodies in 'Dinosaur', to name two, JNH proved that he has a really good track record when it comes to this genre. Gnomeo is no exception. For a kid's movie he manages to deliver a bouncy/lighthearted score along the lines of Bruce Broughton and Thomas Newman.

'Gnomeo and Juliet' opens the album with a mix between some fun, bouncy rthyms before developing percussion. 'Dandelions' is also a nice example of his more fluffy writing, but feels more like something you would hear in a commercial. It's a bit TOO fluffy. James Newton Howard does manage to steer clear of descending too far into this territory by experimenting with some fun, sneaky music in 'Bennie and The Bunnies'. 'Terrafirminator' wraps up the score with 5 minutes of fast paced action music combined with some of Danny Elfman's signature styles. The pros of the music; JNH manages to create an overall fun and exciting score considering what he was given to work with. The cons; the music is a tad too fluffy at times and starts to become nauseously cute. The fast paced music and the more cartoony themes work fairly well. The other stuff doesn't. As for the album itself, I would recommend checking out if you enjoy Elton John. If not, just download all of JNH's music as an Mp3. 15 minutes of score isn't really a good justification for buying the whole album if that's all you want.

7/10 For James Newton Howard's score.
4/10 For the album if you don't like Elton John
8/10 For the album if you do
