Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Music Composed and Conducted by Elmer Bernstein
Yet another classic score that would have been completely lost were it not for Elmer Bernstein himself keeping an archival tape copy in his own collection.
By Love Possessed (1961) is, without a doubt, one of Elmer Bernstein’s romantic classics. It is a sumptuously gorgeous work composed for John Sturges’ film based on James Gould Cozzens’ 1957 novel. The film starred Lana Turner, Efram Zimbalist Jr., Jason Robards, George Hamilton, Susan Kohner, Thomas Mitchell and Barbara Bel Geddes and told the story of the interlocked romantic, familial and ethical problems swirling around the three partners of a small New England law firm.
The story and the setting allowed Bernstein to create a score of exceptional diversity. From soaring love themes and pastoral beauty to rambunctious action and even some of Bernstein’s classic jazz … By Love Possessed really has it all.
If you don’t know the film, don’t let that stand in the way of discovering what will surely become a favorite Bernstein CD. This one is an absolute gem.
